Padres Lose Key Player for Season
The San Diego Padres will be without one of their key players for the remainder of the regular season.
Xander Bogaerts was placed on the 10-day injured list after sustaining an injury during a game against the Mariners on Wednesday. The shortstop reportedly hurt himself while sliding, but thankfully, there’s no broken bone involved.
Typically, such injuries take about 6 to 8 weeks for recovery, which leaves the Padres hoping Bogaerts might be ready for the postseason, as reported by San Diego Union-Tribune.
To fill the roster gap left by Bogaerts, the team has called up infielder Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso. Additionally, former Mets infielder Jose Iglesias is expected to take on more responsibilities at shortstop during this time.
So far this season, the 32-year-old Bogaerts has a batting average of .262, with a .330 on-base percentage, alongside 29 doubles, 20 stolen bases, and 10 home runs.
Since joining the Padres before the 2023 season, Bogaerts has struggled to match his previous successes in Boston, where he earned four All-Star selections and five Silver Slugger awards over a decade.
This isn’t the first time the season has dealt him a tough break. He previously endured a shortened 2024 season due to a broken shoulder and faced another injury during a game in June after sliding headfirst into home plate.
Following that incident, Bogaerts mentioned that he plans to be more cautious going forward. “I feel alright,” he stated, acknowledging the challenges that sliding presents. “On a stolen base, it can get tricky. If I go headfirst, that’s something I have to think about.” He reflected that at home plate, instincts often take over.
