Ryder Cup Dilemma for Zander Schauffele’s Father

Zander Schauffele’s father, Stephen, is feeling overwhelmed by the escalating nature of the Ryder Cup. In a recent interview with The Times in London, he expressed his decision not to attend the upcoming event at Beth Page this September.

“Do I miss the PGA Tour? Not really. And no, I won’t be going to the Ryder Cup,” said Stephen, who has played a significant coaching role in Zander’s golf career.

“I’m actually quite nervous about what might happen in New York,” he added, recalling an incident from Whistling Straits. “When they called out Shane Lowry’s wife, my ears couldn’t believe it.”

He mentioned being disturbed by the events at the Ryder Cup in Rome, specifically regarding Rory McIlroy’s reaction during a confrontation with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava. “To me, it feels like things are getting out of control, and it’s soured my interest in the Ryder Cup.” This emotional response, he indicated, is becoming impossible to ignore.

The incident with McIlroy is somewhat notorious. At the Rome 2023 Ryder Cup, McIlroy had a tense exchange with LaCava after Cantlay paused his putting on the 18th hole. LaCava was celebrating, having waved his hat to the crowd amidst rumors of a protest related to Cantlay’s Ryder Cup rewards.

McIlroy felt that LaCava’s actions disrupted his focus during a crucial moment. This sparked a controversy that overshadowed the Europeans’ dominant performance.

Stephen expressed concern that such rowdy behavior is extending beyond the usual passionate fans, especially after experiencing similar episodes during the last Ryder Cup on American soil.

McIlroy has faced his share of challenges with fan interactions in the past, including being told to “suck it up” and enduring sung renditions of “Sweet Caroline” from the crowd following his breakup with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

As the Ryder Cup draws closer, the expected fan enthusiasm at Beth Page is likely to be intense.

Meanwhile, Zander, having previously won both the PGA Championship and the British Open, is currently ranked just behind Scottie Scheffler in the Ryder Cup standings. However, he won’t have his father there to cheer him on.
