Yankees’ Anthony Volpe makes up for first spring error

Items to watch for Thursday’s Yankees’ Grapefruit League game:

volpe up

Anthony Volpe hit a line drive to left-center field that most people would have considered a single during a scoreless tie between the Yankees and Marlins at Steinbrenner Field, but instead he hit a hustle double. Ta.

volpe down

The hustle double came in the inning just after Volpe made his first error of the spring, losing the ball as he transitioned from his glove to his hands after making a clean catch on a grounder.

It caught my eye

Clayton Beater made his first start this spring and pitched a shutout with four strikeouts in three innings against a typical Marlins batting lineup.

The right-hander, who finished last season in Triple-A, is likely to help whenever the Yankees need a starter.

Beater may not be as bright as pitching prospects like Will Warren or Chase Hampton, but he played his part Thursday night.

Friday schedule

Gerrit Cole will make his Grapefruit League debut starting the 6:35 p.m. game against the Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field.
