Yankees Face Off Against Blue Jays in ALDS
TORONTO – This season, the Rogers Center has become a challenging venue for the Yankees, almost like a personal nightmare.
Part of the struggle stems from how playing in Canada seems to have dismantled their infield defense.
As the Yankees move into the ALDS against the Blue Jays this Saturday, there’s a sense that their recent wildcard series showcased solid defensive play, and they’re really hoping to build on that.
During the regular season, the Yankees ended up 1-6 at this location, racking up an alarming 11 errors across seven games. That’s about 4.3% of all games and 11.7% of their total errors.
However, things are a bit different now with Ryan McMahon, who strengthens the defense since he joined at the trade deadline.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. hasn’t been able to consistently play third base. Meanwhile, Jasson Domínguez has been sidelined with a bench role. On the upside, Anthony Volpe seems to have shaken off a rough summer defensively.
Manager Aaron Boone commented Friday before their matchup at the Rogers Center, “I think we’re better now. What Mac brought to the table, Jazz has stepped up into that as a full-time role. We’ve got a solid team with strong defense, but we still need to perform well.”
Boone referenced a comment made by Blue Jays analyst and former catcher, who had recently critiqued the Yankees, saying they were “not a good team” due to a series of errors and missed opportunities on the field.
Laughing it off, Boone replied, “He’s mistaken. But it doesn’t really change things. We need to play well now, just like everyone else at this stage of the season. We’re feeling confident.”
He added, “We have a new challenge ahead of us with a formidable opponent that’s been resting and waiting for this series.”
The Yankees have evolved since their last visit in July, but the Blue Jays surely present their own set of challenges.
With a striking 17.8% strikeout rate, the Blue Jays have demonstrated impressive hitting ability and speed, which can complicate matters for any opposing team.
This has led to many tense innings earlier in the season when the Yankees struggled against multiple small errors.
Although the Yankees had their issues with the Red Sox during the regular season, they managed to clean up their act in the wildcard series.
“I believe our infield defense is quite solid,” McMahon stated. “Jazz is making incredible plays in the middle. We need to focus on taking care of the baseball and turning those hits into outs.”
