Yankees await details on Jasson Dominguez's injury

Yankees Seeking Solutions for Dominguez’s Injury

While his teammates were resting after a lengthy nine-game road trip across three cities, Jason Dominguez opted to undergo a CT scan on his left elbow on Thursday.

Dominguez was struck by a pitch during Wednesday’s matchup against the Rangers. Unfortunately, the X-ray results weren’t clear, compelling the Yankees to think about how to cover for the young designated hitter and outfielder as they awaited more conclusive test results.

In the immediate future, there’s a possibility that Anthony Volpe could be activated from the injured list on Friday to take over Dominguez’s spot on the roster—instead of Max Schumann, should Dominguez not need to be placed on the injured list.

However, as long as Giancarlo Stanton is sidelined due to a mild right calf strain, the designated hitter position remains unfilled.

Aaron Boone might consider rotating players like Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, or even Amed Rosario at DH. This setup would enable Rice to play there against left-handed pitchers, while Paul Goldschmidt could step in at first base.

If Judge takes on the DH role, the Yankees may look to use Jose Caballero in one corner of the outfield.

On the fans’ radar, there’s a chance they might see Spencer Jones called up, though that likely hinges on the Yankees’ assessment of how long Dominguez and Stanton will be out.

Jones, who made it to the 40-man roster during the offseason, began Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’s had a .242 batting average, with a .902 OPS, seven home runs, and 37 strikeouts over 110 at-bats.

His strikeout rate, at 33.6 percent, is slightly better than those of the past two years, yet it’s still a work in progress.

Meanwhile, Stanton is trying to figure out how long he might be out if he starts moving around more during the upcoming homestand.

On another note, Carlos Rodon was slated to begin his second rehab stint at Double-A Somerset Thursday night, expected to ramp up his innings pitched to the 70s.

Rodon, who came back in October after a procedure to remove a loose body and a bone spur from his elbow, will need at least one more rehab session before he can return to the Yankees.

This situation will likely give Elmer Rodriguez the opportunity to start another game or two in the majors after his debut against the Rangers on Wednesday.
