Yankees Struggle in Game 1 Against Blue Jays

Toronto – The positive energy that the Yankees brought with them faded quickly now that they’re in Canada. It seems that it didn’t hold any value here.

Once again, the team finds itself down 1-0 in the series—another frustrating situation. Their offensive power fell flat at crucial moments, leading to a grim 10-1 defeat to the Blue Jays at the Rogers Center on Saturday.

For the Yankees to head back with a chance to even the series, they’ll need a strong performance from Max Fried in Game 2 on Sunday, alongside a rejuvenated offense.

They really need to show they can win here, especially considering they struggled at the Rogers Center with a 1-7 record this season.

Lewis Gill couldn’t get past 2²/₃ innings, giving up solo home runs to both Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk. The match started slipping away from them in the sixth inning.

With no outs and the score at 2-0, the Yankees had an opportunity but only managed to push one run across, courtesy of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Luke Weaver’s struggles continued as he failed to stop what could have been a comeback in the seventh, giving up a walk and consecutive singles that pushed the score to 3-1 before he exited.

The two runners he left on base were driven in by Fernando Cruz, who doubled for Nathan Lukes, followed by Guerrero’s sacrifice fly that extended the lead to 6-1.

In his two postseason outings, Weaver faced six batters and couldn’t retire any of them, giving up five runs on four hits and two walks. He’s been far from the pitcher he was in 2024, and the team’s hope rests on his shoulders.

Kirk later added a second home run in the eighth inning against Paul Blackburn, while Kevin Gausman expertly pitched five shutout innings, allowing just 50 pitches overall.

At one point, the Yankees had a chance to regain momentum with back-to-back singles, loading the bases without any outs. But Judge, after a tough battle, struck out swinging, squandering that opportunity.

Cody Bellinger followed with a walk that brought the Yankees within 2-1, but then Ben Rice’s pop-up and Stanton’s strikeout effectively quashed their chances, much to the dismay of the 44,655 fans in attendance.

Throughout the wildcard games against the Red Sox, the Yankees’ starting pitching went at least seven innings, showing just how off they were this time.

Gill, for his part, managed only eight outs, and both Guerrero and Kirk made solid contact against him with their homers. His pitches weren’t very effective, generating just six missed swings out of 48.

On a different note, the bullpen did pitch well early on, with Tim Hill covering 1¹/₃ scoreless innings and Kamilo Doval taking care of two perfect frames.

Guerrero, a notable player for the Blue Jays, shone in the field as well, making impressive defensive plays and securing double plays that kept the Yankees at bay.
