Yankees Keep Hopes Alive with Strong Performance Against Blue Jays
This is likely what the Yankees envisioned when they revamped their bullpen earlier this season.
The standout moment from Saturday came courtesy of Cody Bellinger. He made a crucial play in the sixth inning, preventing a run with his strong throw to the plate.
In an encouraging turnaround, the bullpen, which has struggled throughout the year, delivered three scoreless innings. Fernando Cruz and David Bednar helped secure a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays, narrowing the gap in the AL East to just three games behind Toronto.
Lewis Gill also played a key role, pitching six solid innings. Although he walked four batters, he allowed only one run, continuing to impress in his recent appearances.
A rain delay of 1:46 disrupted the game after the sixth inning, but the Yankees managed to win seven out of their last eight matchups against the Blue Jays, who had recently enjoyed a four-game winning streak.
The Yankees took the lead early in the game, aided by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s misplay that shifted momentum. Bellinger got on base with a walk, and a ground ball from Jazz Chisholm Jr. caused confusion, allowing runners on first and third.
Jasson Domínguez scored with a single to center, marking his first run in the lineup, while Austin Wells added another run with a sacrifice fly.
Initially, Gill was cruising through the first three innings but faced challenges in the fourth. After some pitching advice from Matt Blake, he managed to keep the game in check, even when a potential double play didn’t unfold smoothly.
The Yankees had a chance to extend their lead in the fifth, but a ground ball from Bellinger was overturned after a review, keeping the score at 2-1.
The sixth inning saw more action, with Bellinger again playing a pivotal role. After a hit by Bichette, he made a remarkable throw to home plate, allowing Wells to tag the runner and end the inning.
Shortly after, Bassitt left the game following the rain delay after only 80 pitches, and the Yankees capitalized on the opportunity. Domínguez drew a walk, and Wells’s sacrifice fly brought the score to 3-1.
