The Yankees’ 2026 season concluded in a manner reminiscent of 2025, as they fell to a division rival in the second round of the playoffs.
In Game 3 of the ALDS, the Rays edged out the Yankees 4-3, completing a sweep at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.
This outcome echoes the previous year when the Yankees secured victory over the Red Sox in the wild-card round but stumbled against the Blue Jays in the ALDS. Once again, they bested the Red Sox in the first round, yet found themselves unable to surpass another division champion.
Max Fried pitched six innings, allowing four runs, including two home runs, alongside seven hits and seven strikeouts. The pivotal moment came in the sixth inning when Victor Mesa Jr. launched a two-run homer, sending the ball 401 feet into right field and giving the Rays a two-run lead.
The game’s drama wasn’t limited to the home run. In the sixth inning, Anthony Volpe’s deep fly ball initially seemed poised to tie the game. As Mesa jumped at the wall to catch it, a fan interfered by reaching over. Following a review, the umpires deemed the fan’s action as interference, resulting in Volpe being credited with an RBI double. Unfortunately for the Yankees, he was left stranded on base, as they were still behind.
In the eighth inning, with the Yankees down by one and a runner on base with two outs, manager Aaron Boone opted to bring in Giancarlo Stanton as a pinch hitter for Austin Wells. However, the Rays responded by bringing in right-hander Kevin Kelly, who struck out Stanton with just five pitches.
Bryan Baker, who had been reliable throughout the season, struggled a bit in the ninth inning, particularly with his changeup, but ultimately managed to retire the Yankees, sealing the game.
