Yankees Struggle in Showdown Series Against Blue Jays
Toronto – The Yankees appear to be digging themselves into a deeper hole.
In the first game of the Showdown series, the Yankees returned to the site of their earlier sweep and delivered a lackluster performance, ultimately losing 4-1 to the Blue Jays at a packed Rogers Centre.
Key errors from Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe contributed two crucial runs in a five-run innings that really hurt the Yankees. With this loss, the Yankees (55-45) fell behind the Blue Jays (59-41), who sit atop the AL East standings.
The Blue Jays are on a roll, having won 11 straight games at home, a streak that began after they swept the Yankees just a few weeks back.
Carlos Rodon didn’t help his cause on Monday, struggling with a season-high five walks, but the defense also let him down, turning a narrow 2-1 game into a 4-1 deficit.
Against Kevin Gausman, the Yankees managed only one run in seven innings, with Giancarlo Stanton hitting a solitary home run in the fourth, which ended up being their sole run.
Rodon, making his first start after participating in the All-Star Game last Tuesday, found himself in tight spots early on but was able to escape some trouble in the first four innings.
He entered the fifth inning with a 1-0 lead but ended up leaving after a shaky 40-pitch frame, with the Blue Jays taking a 4-1 lead.
George Springer started the fifth with a walk and continued to make life difficult for the Yankees. Then, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. connected with a powerful shot that landed for a single.
Bo Bichette, who had missed the previous meeting due to an injury, turned the game around with a two-run double into the left field corner, putting the Blue Jays ahead 2-1.
Rodon engaged in a tough 14-pitch battle with Davis Schneider, only to have Peraza mishandle a ground ball from Miles Straw, which let Bichette score from second and extend the Blue Jays’ lead to 3-1.
Volpe, unable to secure the grounder cleanly, made his 12th error of the season, allowing Straw to race home, making it 4-1.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the Yankees had a brief opportunity to rally in the eighth inning. But Stanton, unfortunately, hit into a double play, and Jasson Dominguez was unable to capitalize on the moment.
