Yankees’ Jasson Dominguez Update
Manager Aaron Boone revealed that the Yankees were quite anxious regarding Jasson Dominguez’s condition, but it seems they can relax now.
Dominguez underwent a procedure on his left elbow on Wednesday. Boone noted that while the initial X-rays didn’t provide clear results, follow-up imaging indicated that everything seems normal.
Although Dominguez wasn’t part of Friday’s starting lineup, Boone expressed hope that he could join the game from the bench.
“He showed significant improvement on Thursday,” Boone mentioned before the series against the Orioles. “We felt much more optimistic today. We’ll go through pregame activities and see where he stands.”
Dominguez had to exit during the fourth inning of the last game in Arlington—his third game since being called up to fill in for the injured Giancarlo Stanton.
Before his promotion, Dominguez had been performing decently at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hitting just 1-for-9 prior to being hit by a pitch, which led to his ejection.
On Friday, he spent a little time in the clubhouse but quickly took his glove and headed out to the field for practice, showing no visible issues with his elbow.
Without Dominguez, the Yankees went with their standard outfield. Paul Goldschmidt took over at first base, while Ben Rice was designated hitter facing left-hander Cade Povich.
Boone also mentioned that Stanton, who has a right calf strain, could resume hitting this weekend, though nothing is confirmed yet.
In another update, Carlos Rodon might need an additional minor league start before returning to the major leagues. He pitched during his second rehab session on Thursday, throwing 76 pitches in Double-A Somerset, where he allowed five hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings, alongside eight strikeouts.
“He looked solid to me,” Boone said. “What we’ve observed is definitely promising. It feels like he’s almost ready.” Rodon is set to pitch at SWB on Tuesday, the same day Gerrit Cole is scheduled for High-A Hudson Valley.
Boone shared his thoughts about his friend Carlos Mendoza, the Mets’ manager whose job was reportedly in jeopardy until he was given a vote of confidence recently.
“The Mets are facing challenges, but I believe Mendy is doing a great job. He’s well-prepared for everything happening around him, and I’m confident he’ll be alright,” Boone added.
In roster updates, Randal Grichak, who was drafted this week, has decided to become a free agent instead of accepting a permanent transfer to SWB. Additionally, veteran infielder Paul DeJong, who played 23 games with SWB and had an .877 OPS, has opted out of his minor league contract to also become a free agent.
