Notable items from Saturday’s Yankees’ Grapefruit League game:
Wonderful
Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run of the spring with a 116 mph bullet to left-center field off Blue Jays right-hander Paolo Espino in the Yankees’ 10-9 victory at Steinbrenner Field.
Wow
Left-handed relief pitcher Caleb Ferguson had a rough start in his fourth outing this spring, giving up three runs on two hits and one walk, despite recording no outs.
It caught my eye
Anthony Volpe enjoyed a four-hit game, with a double and a single up the middle and a double and a single into the right field seats.
Volpe was known for using all fields when he came up from the minors, but he moved away from that too often in his rookie year.
Fine-tuning his bat trajectory, giving him more margin for error on pitches in the zone, continues to pay off this spring.
Sunday schedule
Will Warren and Clayton Beater are both competing for the fifth starting pitcher spot and are scheduled to pitch in the game against the Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla., at 1:05 p.m.
