After Luis Torrence returned to the team he signed with from Venezuela over a decade ago, he competed for the catcher position within the team, but was hit in the face by a ball and forced to leave the game.

He was trying to throw to third baseman Jesus Castillo, but the throw bounced off Jack Brannigan and bounced into Torrens’ face.

It caught my eye

Nick Vardy has pitched in just 19 games in the majors since 2018, but he’s been playing well so far in Yankees camp, pitching a scoreless inning on Friday night.

He has conceded only one goal in his past four appearances.

Saturday schedule

Lewis Gil will face the Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field at 1:05 p.m., making his first start since Monday’s game against the Phillies, when he had eight strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

This game will be followed by a spring breakout game featuring prospects from both the Yankees and Toronto, who are also at Steinbrenner.
