Yankees manager Aaron Boone defends center fielder after lackadaisical effort leads to brutal error

New York Yankees fans aired their frustration with Trent Grisham on Thursday but didn’t get a similar response from his manager, at least publicly.

The game against the Cincinnati Reds had already been a big win, the Bombers were trailing 8-4 after the ninth inning, when Reds batter Jeimer Candelario hit a ball to center field.

Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham, a two-time Gold Glove winner in center field, was slow to catch the ball and then dropped it while trying to throw it back to the infield, and Candalerio made a deft move to second base.

Boos rained down from Yankees fans, whose team has lost 14 of its past 19 games.

Aaron Boone admitted error.”[looked] It’s bad at the moment, especially with what we’re going through as a team right now.”

But he attributed that to how Grisham plays the position.

“You see that with Gold Glove winner Trent Grisham playing center field — that relaxed, easy-going personality,” Boone said after the game. “Do I want Grisham to tackle the ball head-on like you and I do in the side game? No, I want Grisham to get the ball, take it to the hoop and keep the guy away from second base.”

“But he has a track record of playing great in the past and that’s just the way he is. So when his heart is beating slow, his engine is going and the game is over, he doesn’t look like he’s playing very well. That’s understandable.”

Yankees announcer slams team’s national anthem feud: “Sophomore-level nonsense”

Boone said Friday he had spoken with Grisham but reiterated his position.

“It’s not a pretty look,” Boone said Friday, “but at the same time, one of the reasons he’s a Gold Glove center fielder is because of his heart rate, his reads, his jumps, the ease he has in playing the position. So we don’t want to lose that, but at the same time, we’ve got to take care of some of the day-to-day things.”

“If Grisch makes a mistake down the field, if Gleyber (Torres) makes a mistake down the field, the way they play the game, it’s not going to look good,” Boone added. “It’s not going to look like we’re playing softball, taking the ball off our chests and our chins, but we’re bad.”

“Trust me, that lethargic look he has at times is what makes Trent Grisham a Gold Glove center fielder. He plays with ease and fluidity. Come on, get the ball. You don’t want to put that guy on second base. And in these bad times, that’s a little more accentuated.”

Boone recently benched Gleyber Torres, who was nursing a sore groin, for a lack of effort despite initially putting him on defense, but Grisham was named in Friday’s starting lineup, though the team doesn’t have much of a choice given its injury problems.

Grisham is batting just .165 this season.
