Yankees’ Max Fried loses no-hit bid on controversial scoring change

Tampa – Lost for him in the middle of the 8th time before Max Fried could actually lose his no-hit.

When a deep-fried jogger for the eighth bottom working on a no-hit bid in seven innings jogged to the mound, the official scorer announced a controversial scoring change to give the Rays the first hit of the day.

At the bottom of the sixth, Chandler Simpson hit a ground ball from the first base where Paul Goldschmidt couldn’t field neatly.

The speedy Simpson may have beaten it on the line and beat the fried food Goldschmidt dealing with it, but the play won an error in Goldschmidt.

However, on further review, official scorer Bill Matthews announced that he had changed his scoring to Simpson’s single.

The decision was controversial just minutes later when Jake Mangum led from the eighth bottom at center field from the line drive single.

Freed’s day ended with two batters, pitching seven innings with two hits and two walks, first departing with the runners.
