Yankees' new bullpen falters in first games, losing lead to Marlins

Yankees Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to Marlins

The New York Yankees had promising leads of 6-0 and 9-4 throughout the game, thanks to a revamped bullpen. However, they ultimately faced a disappointing defeat that ended 13-12 against the Miami Marlins.

It looked like the Yankees might pull through, but Carlos Rodon ran into issues during the fifth inning and couldn’t finish his outing. They brought in veteran Jonathan Roissiga, but unfortunately, his struggles continued, which pushed the Marlins ahead.

Trent Grisham responded with a three-run homer in the seventh, bringing the Yankees back within five. At this point, the anxious crowd hoped that their new players would turn the tide. Yet, things took a turn for the worse.

Jake Bird was one of the newcomers, but after a brief outing where he recorded just one out, he gave up a Grand Slam. Then there was David Bednar, who had come in with a decent 2.39 ERA, only to allow two runs on four consecutive hits, including a home run, putting the Marlins in the lead at 10-9.

Despite this, Anthony Volpe continued his power streak, hitting a game-tying homer in the eighth inning. The Yankees, buoyed by his performance, scored additional runs thanks to a trade from last week, and Bednar managed to contain the Marlins in the bottom of the eighth. But then, chaos erupted.

With Camilo Doval on the mound for a save opportunity, things began to unravel. He allowed two runners to reach base, and Xavier Edwards came through with a key hit that ultimately brought home the tying run. It was a comically unfortunate play, as a swinging bunt led to the Yankees’ defeat.

According to stats, this marked the first instance where three different relievers allowed multiple runs on their debuts during a single game. To put this in perspective, it was also the first time since 1973 that the Yankees had allowed over 12 runs in a game.

This loss was particularly painful for the Yankees, as they had the chance to capitalize on the Toronto Blue Jays’ struggles earlier in the day but failed to do so. What a frustrating swing of events.
