Yankees obtain third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies

Yankees Strengthen Roster Before Postseason

The New York Yankees have made a significant move as they gear up for the postseason. They’ve secured third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Gross, as announced on Friday.

At 30 years old, McMahon fills what has been a persistent gap for the Yankees at third base this season. The team has struggled, posting just a .645 OPS from that position.

McMahon’s current batting average stands at .217, with 16 home runs to his name this year. While that might not seem stellar, his .717 OPS is a clear improvement over what Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas have provided. Since May 1, he’s actually seen better results, hitting .246 with 14 home runs.

But, it’s not all about batting stats. McMahon brings defensive prowess to the Yankees’ infield, which they desperately need. During his nine seasons with the Rockies, he’s shown strong skills in that regard.

“Saying farewell to players like Ryan isn’t easy, but our goal at this deadline is focused on future competitiveness,” shared Bill Schmidt, the senior vice president and general manager of the Rockies. He also mentioned the lasting impact McMahon had on the organization since being drafted in 2013.

As for the players going to the Rockies, Herring, only 22, has had a strong season with a 7-3 record and a 1.71 ERA across 16 starts in Single A. Gross, also 22, has a 4-8 record with a 4.14 ERA in 15 starts at High-A Hudson Valley.

The Yankees currently hold a 56-46 record and are optimistic that McMahon will help them secure a postseason spot. Meanwhile, the Rockies, at 26-76, are open to making further trades as they look to rebuild for the future ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
