CLEVELAND – Aaron Boone wanted to rest Paul Goldschmidt during the Yankees’ 13-day stretch of 13 games, which ended Wednesday.
Veteran bats won’t allow that.
So Boone compromised him on Wednesday with DH and Goldschmidt just kept hits, earning three hits in a 5-1 win over the Guardians at Progressive Field.
The 37-year-old has scored multiple hits in 12 of his 25 games, and has been hit by eight games, increasing his average to .383.
“I said [after signing with the Yankees] I’m confident that I can play at a high level. “We don’t know what’s going to happen, we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Goldschmidt said.
“It’s a decent start for me, and we try to keep doing it and keep working hard, but there are a lot of games.
Goldschmidt has one home run for the season, but he was closer to adding one second on Wednesday, but settled on a pair of doubles while driving on two runs.
Goldschmidt served as a regular clean-up hitter against the right wing, providing two spots behind the judges with a consistent approach.
“It’s huge,” the judge said. “Make my job simple. Try riding on a base. I know he’ll knock me or do something special. [Giancarlo Stanton]the person who speaks. Scouting report, what he is thinking, what he is going to do this time. He is a professional. He takes notes. He remembers the batting even a few years ago. The knowledge this man has is impressive. So we are lucky to have him. ”
Anthony Volpe had a tough day at the plate, continued his tough stretches, and went 5-5 with four strikeouts.
He has fallen further into a slump, 54-7 (.130) in the last 16 games.
“I really felt the first few days he was swinging the bat better here,” Boone said. “Tampa is one series that felt like he had a bit of a struggle to rock the bat a little, and today there were obviously some swings and mistakes out there.
“It’s often a little less, sometimes you can take over your athletic ability, speed, fast ensuing. You want to make it a little worse.
Jasson Domínguez’s double in five innings provided an unusually bright spot for switch hitters from the right side and came out from left-handed reliever Joey Cantillo.

He finished 29-3 against the left-hander this season.
After the game, the Yankees returned infielder Yorubibas to Triple A and cleared the path to Trent Grisham I’ll be off my father’s list on Friday.
Vivas has not made his MLB debut yet.
