Yankees Struggle in Loss Against Braves

ATLANTA – Baseball often surprises its fans, but not every game lives up to that expectation.

Friday night was one of those disappointing outings for the Yankees, who opted for a bullpen game due to injuries affecting Cam Schlittler and Max Fried.

Ian Hamilton got off to a shaky start, and things didn’t improve much from there. A baserunning blunder by Yorvit Vivas compounded the Yankees’ troubles, leading to a 7-3 loss to the Braves at Trust Park.

The defeat marks a rough beginning to the second half of the season, showcasing a pitching effort from four different players over eight innings.

With a record of 53-44, the Yankees have stumbled recently, losing six games in a row, followed by five consecutive losses, and now three straight.

Instead of diving straight into a bullpen game, the Yankees could have elevated a starter like La Alain Winans or Carlos Carrasco for more length. However, that would have meant placing Schlittler or Fried on the injured list—something the team believed was unnecessary, given their upcoming games against the Blue Jays.

“We could have called up a starter, but after considering everything, this felt like the right move,” said Aaron Boone before the game.

Things started poorly for the Yankees as the Braves took a quick 1-0 lead. As the inning progressed, it quickly ballooned to 3-0.

Jurickson Profar kicked off the scoring against Hamilton, followed by back-to-back doubles from Matt Olson and Ronald Acuña Jr. Acuña later crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Ozzie Albies.

Spencer Strider kept the Yankees in check early on, but Vivas and Trent Grisham managed to threaten in the third inning.

In a confusing play, Bellinger tried to tag Acuña at third, but ultimately, Acuña hit a high fly ball caught easily in right field. Vivas seemed to hesitate before reaching third base, which turned what could have been a key moment into yet another costly error for the Yankees.

Things worsened for New York when Albies smashed a three-run homer off Garcia, pushing the score to 7-0 by the end of the fourth inning.

Garcia threw 2 2/3 innings on 53 pitches, leading to speculation about his future with the team.

It wasn’t until the seventh inning that the Yankees avoided being shut out, thanks to a two-run double from Giancarlo Stanton and an RBI single by Bellinger, narrowing the deficit to 7-3. However, the rally ended when Aaron Judge struck out against Dylan Lee.
