Yankees’ Scott Effross’ Tommy John recovery derailed by back surgery

TAMPA — Scott Efros’ return from Tommy John surgery has been delayed due to surgery on another part of his body.

The Yankees relief pitcher underwent back surgery in December, which will delay his return until sometime this summer, manager Aaron Boone announced Wednesday.

Efros underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2022, which caused him to miss the entire 2023 season, but he had hoped to have a normal spring training session this year.

Instead, back problems crept in in late fall, Boone said, and his efforts to overcome them ultimately required surgery.

“So, the set is [his Tommy John rehab] I’m back a little bit,” Boone said. “I think he started his pitching program last week, but it’s gotten a little more complicated as he finishes his Tommy John.” [rehab] Then throw Buck into the mix. It will be a slow growth. ”

With Efros on the shelf, they should earn at least one bullpen job this camp, which could open the door for a player like Ron Marinaccio to join the team.

The Yankees originally acquired Efros from the Cubs at the 2022 trade deadline.

The 30-year-old right-hander, who is under contract through 2027, appeared in 13 games that season and had a 2.13 ERA, but suffered a torn UCL on the eve of the 2022 playoffs, requiring Tommy John surgery. .

Jose Trevino recently suffered a calf strain while preparing for spring training, which will likely cause him to miss “the first few weeks” of Grapefruit League games, Boone said.

The coach said he expects Trevino to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Boone said Trevino did light agility drills in the backfield Wednesday and has already done some running and catching drills.

“It just slows us down a little bit because we’re so responsive,” Boone said.
