The New York Yankees unveiled new uniforms Thursday that remove the white piping that outlines the word “New York” and the number that has been on road jerseys since 1973.
The design change comes after Major League Baseball changed the material of its jerseys.
The new jerseys received criticism during spring training with some players criticizing the “cheap” look of the small last name on the back of the jersey.

There are no last names on the Yanks uniforms, but even the uniforms look tattered.
The Yanks open the season in Houston, and the players are sweating in their jerseys.

Jerseys are attracting attention. Boomer Esiason and Greg Gianotti of WFAN, the radio network that broadcasts Yankees games, copied them.
“I’m watching the game and I’m thinking, ‘Damn, that uniform looks so plain,'” Esiason said Friday. “I could see the sweat. It was horrible. … I’ve never seen guys sweat like that through their uniforms.”
“I forgot [the jerseys] “For a while,” Gio answered, “but they’re terrible.”

During spring training, photos of his tucked-in jersey showing through his pants and too much of his pants became a hot topic on the internet.
Dennis Nolan, MLB’s senior vice president of global consumer products, insisted the uniforms are “world class.” Stephen Roche, another global consumer executive, said his company is “performance driven.”
According to the league’s website, this year’s uniforms have 25 percent more stretch than last year, with several players praising their lighter feel. The league tested the uniforms on hundreds of players and debuted them at last year’s All-Star Game, where they were well-received. Last year, Fanatics measured every player and Nike scanned the bodies of more than 300 players to get the ideal fit.
