Yankees to get ‘creative’ with closer role amid Clay Holmes’ disaster stretch

Clay Holmes hasn't completely lost his position as the Yankees' closer, but he's likely to get fewer playing times in the future.

Manager Aaron Boone He told reporters Wednesday that he plans to get “creative.” With Holmes having been hit hard, he will likely take on the closer role and choose pitchers depending on the opponent.

Boone added that Holmes will still be a contender in those matchups.

When asked if Luis Gill or Clark Schmidt would be options down the stretch, “I would never say it's impossible,” Boone said.

The right-hander has had a tough day, giving up a walk-off grand slam to the Rangers on Tuesday night for his league-leading 11th failed save of the year.

Holmes appeared in 17 games in the second half of the season and had a 4.50 ERA.

Greg Joyce of the Post reported that Tommy Kahnle, Luke Weaver and Jake Cousins are the front-runners to replace Holmes as the closer if he doesn't pitch in a save situation.
