Following the explosion, the Biscuit Basin parking lot and trails have been temporarily closed as Yellowstone geologists continue to investigate the incident.

Yellowstone National Park said in a statement that hydrothermal explosions occur when water underground suddenly turns to steam, making Tuesday’s eruption “relatively common.”

“For example, Porkchop Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin experienced an explosion in 1989, and monitoring equipment recorded a minor event in the Norris Geyser Basin on April 15, 2024,” Yellowstone explained in a statement. “An event similar to today’s explosion also occurred in Biscuit Basin on May 17, 2009.”

The park said “today’s explosion does not reflect volcanic activity and volcanic activity remains at normal background levels,” easing concerns about further explosions in the area.
