(UPI) — The fate of the Dutton family and the Montana ranch their family has worked and protected for more than a century was revealed in Sunday night's Yellowstone Season 5 finale.
I'll give spoilers ahead.
After patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is murdered, will his adult children Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Casey (Luke Grimes) come up with millions of dollars to pay the estate taxes? , faced the seemingly impossible dilemma of whether to sell to a developer. Clear vast tracts of pristine land and build resorts, shopping centers, condominium complexes, and airports.
However, Casey comes up with the idea to sell the ranch to Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) for a small sum of money, following a promise his ancestors made to the area's Native Americans years before, and saves the day. Ta. Returning land to indigenous people over seven generations.
As part of the deal, Rainwater promises not to build on or sell it.
Casey and his family were also allowed to keep the house and small plot of land for themselves, and the bodies of the deceased Dutton family members, including John, were also allowed to remain on the property.
Yellowstone no longer functioning as a ranch means everyone who works there will have to find new jobs.
After an auction of the animals and equipment, a heartfelt private funeral is held for John and the cowboys to go their separate ways.
Meanwhile, Beth has some unfinished business before she heads off to the small new ranch she and Rip have purchased.
She must kill her adopted brother, Jamie (Wes Bentley), who she considers responsible for her father's death.
After a brutal confrontation at their home, Beth stabs Jamie and Lip, and Lloyd (Foley J. Smith) disposes of their bodies.
Beth calls the police and tells them that Jamie attacked her and ran away after confronting her about missing the funeral of the man she helped kill.
Built as a season finale rather than a series finale, the episode ends with Beth and Rip, Casey and his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbill) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) settling into their new home.
Back at the ranch, Rainwater finds his tribemates playing music, knocking down a giant “Y” in the stables, and demolishing John's luxurious lodge home to return the property to its natural state. I watched it start.
But when the children begin kicking over the Dutton family gravestone, Rainwater's right-hand man, Mo (Moses Brings Plenty), chastises them for disrespecting the people who have protected the land.
He then acquired the rights to the stone of John and his ancestor Elsa, played by Isabel May in the 1883 Yellowstone prequel.
