Blaze News reported this week that several high school teachers were subjected to abusive language following Donald Trump's victory over Kamala Harris in the presidential election.
Two of the teachers are from schools in Southern California, and both were placed on administrative leave for their actions the day after the election. One was an English teacher at Chino High School who was furious after a student wore a Trump hat during class. The other, an Advanced Placement world history teacher at Valley View High School in Moreno Valley, launched a profane rant against Trump during class.
“if, [teacher] If you are exercising your First Amendment rights, you risk losing your job. It's that simple. ”
Now, it appears a third Southern California high school teacher has been named to the list.
To quote my parents, KABC TV reported A teacher at Cerritos High School was forced to leave class last week because students were wearing “Make America Great Again” costumes.
Sakura Padilla, a classmate, told police, “He was probably just a student who was wearing a shirt as a joke.''
However, KABC said the teacher was clearly not in a funny mood and posted a lengthy note to students saying it was unfair that teachers can't wear political attire but students can wear political attire. He said that he was told that
The district said it was investigating the teacher's actions, but the department said it was not clear whether the teacher had returned.
The school district added to KABC that students can exercise their right to free speech within the policies of the school board and state education code.
“It's different with teachers, because they're there to do a job,” Michael Oberling, an attorney who teaches First Amendment rights at the University of Southern California, told the station.
Courts have ruled that students have greater freedom of speech because they are required to attend school, but Oberling told WABC that teachers are required to work in schools. The school district's rules will be followed.
“if, [teacher] “If they are exercising their First Amendment rights, they risk losing their jobs,” Oberling added to the station. “It's very simple.”
