Analysis of Iranian Nuclear Negotiations
During a recent episode of MS NOW’s Versi program, political analyst Ben Rhodes addressed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragushi’s statement about nuclear weapon discussions with the U.S. Rhodes acknowledged that even if one disagrees with Aragushi’s politics, he might still be a more credible voice on these matters compared to others involved in the negotiations, like Steve Witkoff from the Peace Mission.
Rhodes shared his thoughts after watching a clip where Aragushi indicated that advancements had been made in negotiations and clarified that mentions of nuclear capabilities were not threats. He found Aragushi’s perspective “very plausible,” supported by other information and the fact that Aragushi served as Iran’s lead negotiator during the talks that resulted in the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA under the Obama administration. This experience holds weight, especially considering that Aragushi has been negotiating Iran’s nuclear agenda for over ten years. In contrast, Witkoff was selling real estate just a year and a half prior.
Rhodes noted that while Aragushi might have shifted his negotiating stance over time, it was essential to examine whether the commitments of the JCPOA were upheld. He emphasized that it was former President Trump who withdrew from the agreement. According to Rhodes, Aragushi’s expertise on nuclear negotiations surpasses that of those like Jared Kushner and Witkoff, who seemed to lack substantial understanding regarding international nuclear oversight, specifically the International Atomic Energy Agency, prior to their involvement.
