Trump’s State of the Union Address Sparks Tension with Democrats
During the State of the Union address on February 24, 2026, President Donald Trump had a notable exchange with Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, bluntly stating they should feel “ashamed” of themselves.
As he addressed Congress, Trump prompted those who think the government’s main role is to protect citizens rather than undocumented individuals to stand up. Several Democrats chose to remain seated.
“These people are crazy… with people like this, Democrats are destroying our country,” Trump remarked. “Isn’t that a shame? You should be ashamed of yourselves, not standing up.”
Both Omar and Tlaib were heard shouting back at Trump during this part of his speech.
“You have killed Americans,” Omar retorted.
“You should be ashamed of yourself,” Trump countered.
Following these exchanges, Trump criticized sanctuary cities for prioritizing criminals over law-abiding citizens and proposed severe penalties for officials who hinder the deportation process. His comments come amid ongoing efforts to bolster immigration enforcement in various locations.
In Minneapolis, the push for enforcement appears to be influenced by accusations of significant fraud in the local Somali community. This situation reflects growing concerns regarding public safety and challenges related to illegal activities tied to immigration enforcement.
“The Somali pirates who ransacked Minnesota remind us that there are large parts of their world where bribery, corruption, and lawlessness are the norm, not the exception,” Trump stated. “Importing these cultures through unrestricted immigration and open borders brings those problems right here to the USA and it is the American people who pay the price.”
Omar, a former Somali refugee who became a U.S. citizen in 2000, spoke in a video before the speech, emphasizing that she wouldn’t let the public forget the “terror” Trump has brought to Minnesota. She mentioned bringing four guests to the address, which included individuals with personal ties to immigration enforcement issues.
One of these guests, Aliyah Rahman, had also been detained by ICE and was eventually escorted out of the chamber during the proceedings.
