LeBron James is facing backlash from young fans in Memphis following some taunting remarks he made about the city.
This weekend, two youthful supporters of the Grizzlies shared their thoughts after a local news station interviewed them. The kids didn’t hold back after hearing LeBron’s comments in a YouTube video where he joked about Memphis and its standing in the NBA.
One young fan declared, “I’ve hated LeBron James ever since. He can’t take Memphis lightly.” Another chimed in, dismissing James’ credibility with, “This uncle can’t talk, brother. Maybe he was good in his prime, but can we retire him now? We need to get him out of here.”
While shooting a golf video, James remarked during a session with a sports channel that Memphis is among the least visited cities in the league. He even suggested the franchise consider relocating to Nashville.
His remarks did not sit well with many, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, who criticized James on social media late Sunday.
“The funny thing is, he (LeBron) doesn’t care,” Owens noted, pointing to a sense of entitlement that he feels many celebrities exhibit.
In response to the backlash, James brushed off the comments during a recent Lakers practice. He noted, “Did I say I hate black people?… I’m 41 years old. I really just dislike playing in Milwaukee and Memphis. I don’t even enjoy going home.” He quickly clarified that his frustration is more about accommodations than the city itself: “I’m not talking about the city, like the people of Memphis. I don’t like staying at Hyatt Centric. So what’s the problem? Nothing. What are we talking about? People need to be thoroughly relaxed.”
