Young Voters Share Thoughts on Trump

A recent focus group by the New York Times revealed that many young voters view President Donald Trump’s past term fairly positively. The discussion, involving 13 participants, touched on various current issues like artificial intelligence, social media, and the economy, alongside their perspectives on the political landscape.

While some expressed worries about the country’s direction, eight participants felt Trump was performing well, and seven anticipated improvements over the next four years. One participant, Evan, a 23-year-old Latino Republican, praised Trump for his determination. “I appreciate how tough he is,” he said. “It’s good to see him actually trying to make a difference. Unlike Biden, who feels a bit, well, uninspired.”

The group generally diverged in their outlook on the future. Seven believed things had improved, while three viewed the situation as “even worse,” and another three thought it would remain unchanged. Johnny, a 27-year-old woman and Democratic voter, expressed a more hopeful view. “I think this administration will stabilize things eventually,” she noted. “Inflation might get better. I can’t picture this current trend lasting forever.”

Evan shared a similar optimism regarding Trump’s second term. “I hope they learn from their previous mistakes. What’s the point of not improving in the next four years?” he reflected.

Contrastingly, Bailey, a Texas Democrat voter, had a more skeptical stance. “While it might be the end of Trump’s term coming up, I think there will still be a lot of instability,” he commented.

The focus group later evaluated Trump with letter grades. Nobody awarded him an A, but five participants—three Republicans and two independents—gave him a B. Three others—two independents and one Democrat—assigned him a C.

Dallion, a Republican from Indiana, noted a mix of positive and negative aspects when explaining his C grade. “On one hand, I like how he represents America globally in trade matters; on the other, I’m concerned about the effects his policies have on cryptocurrencies and the stock market,” he stated.

Johnny, another C-grade giver, remarked, “Nothing alarming is really happening, but I have my qualms about things like tariffs.”
