Young Directors Make Waves at the Box Office

A couple of young filmmakers have recently made headlines with their horror films, stirring conversations about box office success. Director Cain Parsons, just 20 years old, has now set a record as the youngest director to release the number one film at the box office. His new movie, “Backrooms,” has pulled in an impressive $81 million.

This film is an adaptation of Parsons’ earlier web series, which took off in 2022. It centers around a group of scientists who stumble upon an unsettling dimension, filled with endless empty indoor spaces. The premise apparently originated from an eerie image shared on 4chan back in 2019.

In addition to Parsons’ success, there’s also Currie Barker, 26, a director who gained recognition for his low-budget horror flick, “Obsession.” Barker’s film originally had modest expectations of earning less than $10 million, yet it managed to rake in $17 million during its opening weekend.

Interestingly, “Obsession” followed up its initial success by earning around $24 million the next weekend. The film’s box office numbers just kept growing, even surpassing established titles like “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and the latest “Star Wars” release. It’s not very common for a film to show such resilience, especially in its third week, but “Obsession” reportedly gained another $26 million in its most recent weekend.

The leading stars of “Backrooms” include notable names like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and the film was produced on a budget of $10 million. That’s also worth mentioning, Parsons’ YouTube channel, Kane Pixel, has amassed over 3 million subscribers, largely thanks to the popularity of his series.

As for “Obsession,” it focuses on a young man whose wish for a crush to love him back leads to disastrous results. Shot with a relatively unknown cast, it was produced for under $1 million, yet has now surpassed $100 million in domestic earnings.

Interestingly, both “Backrooms” and “Obsession” are products of Blumhouse Productions, which has built a reputation for financing low-budget horror films. They’ve seen incredible returns, with “Backrooms” reportedly doing quite well against some heavy competition, including “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which struggled with sales and faced a significant drop in revenue.

In short, these new filmmakers are doing something that some might have thought was nearly impossible in today’s cinematic landscape. Between small budgets and clever setups, they have found a way to outshine more prominent releases, leaving a mark that’s hard to ignore. What’s next? Only time will tell, but the momentum is definitely interesting to watch.
