Controversial Texts from Virginia Attorney General Candidate

The recent revelation of a troubling text message from Jay Jones, the Democratic candidate for attorney general in Virginia, has left many feeling unsettled. The message, shared by Virginia faith-based organizations, reflects an escalating concern among certain progressive voters.

In 2022, Jones reportedly sent a disturbing note to Republican Representative Carrie Coyner, threatening to give former Republican Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert “two bullets in the head” and to desecrate his grave. This alarming exchange was first reported by National Review.

On October 3rd, Jones publicly acknowledged the gravity of his words and extended an apology to Gilbert and his family. Additionally, messages obtained by The Daily Caller indicate that several voters reacted to Jones’ remarks, raising further alarm among some segments of the electorate. Explicit death threats were reportedly sent in response, which has prompted an ongoing police investigation. This situation illustrates a growing rift within liberal factions in Virginia.

Some of the texts expressed Jones’ frustration with the Republican Party, stating things like, “I wish all Republicans were dead. They’re ruining this country.” Another message disparaged conservatives, labeling them “inhuman cretins” who deserve to be “swiftly crushed without remorse.” Screenshots also suggested comparisons between MAGA supporters and Nazis, asserting that more Nazis must be eliminated.

Victoria Cobb, President of the Family Foundation Action, expressed her dismay at the reactions from what she termed “moderate liberal voters.” She noted that if this is the prevailing sentiment among such voters, the response from more radical activists could be even more concerning. Cobb highlighted the disturbing implications of Jones’ texts, particularly in light of recent political violence.

Coyner also claimed that in a prior conversation from 2020, Jones suggested that killing some police officers could somehow prevent further deaths.

In a separate note, Jones mentioned plans to perform community service equivalent to 1,000 hours—partly stemming from a reckless driving charge from 2022. However, there are questions about the legitimacy of his political action committee, which, while registered, does not hold nonprofit status, suggesting potential complications with community service regulations.
