Your mattress can now inform you about your aging rate.

People are increasingly focused on maximizing their sleep quality. They’re exploring high-tech mattresses and bedding that allow them to track sleep patterns and improve their rest.

In an interesting collaboration, a brand that coined the term “sleep fitness” has teamed up with Bryan Johnson, sometimes referred to as the “immortal uncle.” They’ve created a new feature that enables users to monitor how quickly they are aging while they sleep.

Eight Sleep, known for its popular Pod cooling system, has integrated a biological age feature to help users grasp not just the efficiency of their sleep, but also the status of their aging process.

Johnson, a biohacker and longevity enthusiast who’s been an advocate for prioritizing sleep, has been using the Pod for years. “Bryan has dedicated years to assessing what influences the aging process,” Matteo Franceschetti, Eight Sleep’s co-founder and CEO, commented. “His insights have shaped our approach to making longevity data more practical and accessible.”

The Eight Sleep Pod system includes items like cooling pillow covers, a mattress cover for tracking biometric data, a hydro-powered blanket connected to the mattress cover, and a hub that powers everything.

By utilizing sensors embedded in the Pod mattress cover, this new feature assesses various biological indicators of aging, such as heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, sleep stages, and duration. It can even differentiate activity metrics for two people sharing the same bed.

Additionally, users can link a fitness tracker, like an Apple Watch, to incorporate data about their daily activities and health records for a more complete view of their well-being.

Biological age varies from chronological age, which merely tracks the time since birth. Instead, it reflects the functional condition of cells, tissues, and organs. Several elements, including genetics, weight, environment, and lifestyle choices—like diet, exercise, and sleep—contribute to biological aging.

“Because this feature is integrated into the bed, it’s an effortless experience,” Franceschetti noted. “You just sleep comfortably while the Pod continuously monitors your body’s performance night after night.”

To ensure precision, the system’s sensors were validated against established clinical benchmarks. For example, the system’s accuracy in measuring sleeping heart rate was found to be 99% compared to an ECG, and the respiratory rate was 98% accurate when evaluated against techniques used to study lung function.

“For the Biological Age specifically, we developed a new health foundation model based on data from over 100,000 participants and 2.7 million hours of biometric sleep data,” Franceschetti explained. “That level of accuracy is crucial for determining Biological Age.”

The system also calculates the speed of aging, which refers to the relative pace of aging compared to calendar time.

While the Biological Age feature and the Pod aren’t intended to supplant clinical care, Franceschetti emphasizes the importance of consistency in monitoring changes in one’s health over time, especially in relation to one’s baseline and in comparison with similarly aged individuals.

“I really believe Eight Sleep users will appreciate the Biological Age feature as it could help them understand how their lifestyle choices impact their health,” Johnson mentioned in an Eight Sleep press release.

The latest Pod system is available for $2,999 and comes with a five-year warranty. Eight Sleep also provides a 30-night risk-free trial, along with free shipping and returns.
