MS Rachel’s Activism Sparks Controversy
At first glance, MS Rachel’s Instagram profile seems like that of a typical influencer, known for her engaging educational content for toddlers and parenting advice. Charming in her pink hairbands and denim dungarees, the 42-year-old mother of two shares support for parents navigating potty training and other challenges.
However, last year marked a pivot for her when she began speaking out about the plight of children in Gaza. “I think it’s controversial to remain silent,” she stated in a recent interview with anchor Mahdi Hassan, highlighting the backlash she has faced regarding her advocacy and fundraising.
“It’s unfortunate that discussing the struggles of children suffering so much becomes a point of contention. I couldn’t choose to stay quiet,” she concluded.
This shift has put her in the spotlight, especially as the situation for children in war-torn Palestinian areas worsens, with aid slow to arrive amidst dire food shortages and increasing suffering.
The backlash against her social media activism, aimed more at raising awareness than creating children’s content, mirrors the growing division in the U.S. over the ongoing conflict.
“All Children, In All Countries”
Last May, Accurso initiated a fundraiser that successfully raised $50,000 for Save the Children. Still, she has faced emotional reactions and accusations of being anti-Israel.
“Palestinian, Israeli, and American children—Muslims, Jews, Christians—all children in all countries should be cared for,” she emphasized. “No one should be excluded.”
Allegations of bias against Israel have amplified since then. The casualty figures among Gaza children have been alarming, with reports from the Hamas-run health ministry indicating over 10,000 child fatalities since the violence erupted, compared to 1,218 on the Israeli side.
Recently, a pro-Israel lobbying group called on U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate any foreign funding that promotes anti-Israel messaging, claiming that such narratives distort public sentiment. The group described itself as a grassroots watchdog, accusing others of disseminating Hamas propaganda.
In a statement to the New York Times, Accurso dismissed these allegations as “absurd” and “false.” She highlighted the tragic reality of thousands of Gaza children suffering, asserting that caring for one group doesn’t diminish concern for another.
“You Should Be Ashamed”
While Accurso has disabled comments on some of her posts focusing on Palestinian issues, reactions to others reveal a wide range of emotions. One user commented, “I love your show, not your politics,” while another called her “a national treasure.”
Notable voices like Tommy Beiotter, who worked with former President Barack Obama on the Pod Save America podcast, expressed dismay over the politicization of anti-Semitism allegations. “Making these claims for political reasons only exacerbates the issue,” he noted while defending Accurso.
Despite the backlash, Accurso remains steadfast. She recently shared a touching moment with Rahaf, a three-year-old girl from Gaza who lost both her legs in an attack. “We cannot ignore how children in Gaza are treated. It’s fundamentally wrong,” she lamented, sharing an image of them together.
“Any leader who remains silent in the face of this should feel ashamed. Your silence will be remembered.”
