A’s Suffer Another Heartbreaking Loss as Ginn’s No-Hitter Slips Away
The A’s faced a tough defeat that echoes their loss from Monday night.
Pitcher JT Ginn was tantalizingly close to making history with a no-hitter, entering the ninth inning with only three outs left. That would have marked the first no-hitter in MLB since September 2024. But, despite six solid innings, the dream fell apart.
Adam Frazier ignited hope for the Angels by leading off the ninth inning with a single, breaking up the no-hitter. Surprisingly, A’s manager Mark Coetzee chose to keep Ginn on the mound, even though he had already thrown over 100 pitches.
In retrospect, that decision did not pan out well. Angels shortstop Zach Neto capitalized on the moment, launching a walk-off homer—a 413-foot shot—sealing a 2-1 victory for the Angels. It was a tough blow after a promising start for Ginn and the Athletics.
Commentators couldn’t hide their disappointment. “What a gut punch for the Athletics,” noted Jenny Cavner during the game commentary. Dallas Braden added, “An incredibly disappointing series of events… it’s about as bad an ending as you could have expected.” Those reactions really capture the sense of loss felt by the team.
Reflecting on the game, Ginn said, “It’s just a crazy game we play, you know? I was behind 2-0 and threw a good sinker, but [Neto] waited and made a good swing.” Neto was quick to acknowledge that he was just trying to make something happen. “My swing is starting to get better little by little… I took advantage of that opportunity,” he said after the game.
For the Angels, this victory was long overdue. They entered Monday’s game with six consecutive losses, holding the worst record in the majors. Despite the win, their record remains dismal at 17 wins and 31 losses.
Neto expressed the sense of relief the team felt. “We can just take some weight off our shoulders and sleep well tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll come in with a better attitude. We still believe in each other.” It’s heartening, really, to hear that kind of optimism in the face of adversity.
Meanwhile, the A’s have now lost six out of their last eight games. Yet, surprisingly, they still find themselves in first place in the AL West Division, with a record of 23-24, just one game behind the Mariners.
They’ll have another chance to improve the situation Tuesday night in Anaheim, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 PM PT.
