Zach Wilson enters wild QB situation with Broncos after Jets trade

Zach Wilson’s turbulent tenure with the Jets ends with an interesting landing.

The Jets sent Wilson and a seventh-round pick to the Broncos on Monday in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

Wilson joins a quarterback room that is empty of players who have had success as NFL starters.

The Broncos released Russell Wilson earlier this offseason, absorbing $85 million in dead cap money to let the quarterback go after two seasons in Denver because he wasn’t a good fit with Sean Payton.

Jarrett Stidham will likely be at the top of the depth chart, at least for the time being.

Stidham, 27, started the Broncos’ final two games this season when Wilson sat on the bench so the team wouldn’t have to worry about Wilson playing an erratic play that would trigger a contractual injury guarantee.

In 2022, he started two games for the Raiders.

Stidham was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and backed up Tom Brady in his rookie season, Cam Newton in his second year and Mac Jones in his third year.

The other quarterback currently under contract with the Broncos is Ben DiNucci, who started one game with the Cowboys in 2020.

DiNucci served as a backup for the Cowboys in 2020 and 2021, played for the XFL’s Portland Sea Dragons in 2023, and signed with the Broncos last May.

Wilson was selected No. 2 overall by the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the team went 12-21 as a starter over the past three seasons.

It remains to be seen whether the Broncos add another quarterback through the draft, trade or free agency.
