Ukrainian Delegation Prepares for Talks with U.S. Envoy
KYIV, Ukraine — President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that a Ukrainian delegation is set to meet with a U.S. envoy this Thursday, aiming to prepare for another round of discussions that include Russia.
In a media briefing on Wednesday, Zelenskiy mentioned that Rustem Umerov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, would engage with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkov and Jared Kushner, who is President Trump’s son-in-law.
Umerov’s press secretary, Diana Davityan, confirmed that these talks are scheduled to occur in Geneva.
Interestingly, on the same day, nuclear discussions between the U.S. and Iran will also be held in the Swiss city.
Earlier this year, U.S. initiatives prompted Russia and Ukraine to gather in Abu Dhabi and Geneva, but those discussions failed to bridge significant gaps as Russia continues its full-scale invasion, now in its fifth year.
Zelenskiy indicated that the upcoming meeting would focus on potential plans for post-war reconstruction in Ukraine and lay the groundwork for future tripartite talks with Russian officials. He also instructed Umerov to negotiate a possible prisoner exchange.
Confidence is somewhat tentative, but Ukraine is hopeful that discussions with Russia can take place next week.
As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaches, Zelenskiy emphasized that despite facing a larger and more equipped military, along with extensive shelling of civilian areas, Ukraine remains unbroken in spirit.
Recent reports from the Institute for War Research suggest that Ukraine has been pushing back against Russian forces along a front line stretching about 1,250 kilometers (750 miles) in the east. This uptick in military activity could disrupt Russia’s forthcoming offensive plans, even though a significant escalation is considered unlikely due to Ukraine’s troop shortages.
On another note, Ukraine continues to target military and allied infrastructure deep within Russia with long-range drones almost nightly.
The U.S. State Department has expressed concerns regarding Ukrainian attacks on the Novorossiysk port in the Black Sea, which have implications for U.S. oil interests in Kazakhstan, according to Washington’s envoy in Kyiv.
In a recent Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Smolensk region, four workers at the Dorogovzh fertilizer factory lost their lives, and ten others were injured. This incident led to a fire at the facility, as reported by Governor Vasily Anokhin.
Additionally, Ukrainian authorities noted that Russia launched an attack involving 115 drones overnight, which tragically resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to a child in a village in the southern Zaporizhzhya region.
