Zelensky Expresses Gratitude to Melania Trump Over War Issues
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently thanked Melania Trump for addressing a significant issue stemming from the war: the forced acquisition of Ukrainian children by Russia.
Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, also sent a note of appreciation to Mrs. Trump.
In her letter, Melania Trump implored Russian President Vladimir Putin to safeguard the innocence of children by restoring peace. She described a haunting scenario where some children must “sing quiet laughter” amidst the darkness surrounding them—a subtle act of defiance against oppressive forces.
Her letter conveyed that, in protecting these innocent children, one serves not only Russia but humanity as a whole. It suggested that this noble idea transcends all human divisions and called on Putin to act on this vision swiftly.
The note was delivered to Putin by former President Donald Trump during a meeting in Alaska. Interestingly, while Melania Trump didn’t specify Ukrainian children or categorize the victims of Putin’s war, the implication was clear. The International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued an arrest warrant for Putin in March 2023 related to the abduction of Ukrainian children by Russian troops, naming a member of Putin’s “Child Rights Committee” as well.
ICC Judge Piotr Hofmanski noted that international law explicitly protects children under the Geneva Convention.
Zelensky highlighted the heartbreaking reality of children missing in Ukraine during his remarks. He emphasized that this situation encapsulates the humanitarian tragedy of war, where broken families and painful separations abound, citing that at least 20,000 children have been taken.
He expressed appreciation to President Trump for sharing a letter of thanks from Olena Zelenska with Melania, asserting that her voice and compassion empower this important cause.
Zelensky assured that his government is diligently working to bring all abducted children home. He extended this commitment to prisoners of war and civilians held in Russia, many facing dire conditions for years. He stated that thousands of individuals require release, stressing that this is integral to fostering peace.
The President mentioned ongoing negotiations for prisoner exchanges, expressing gratitude for the support of strong allies, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
On a broader note, Trump indicated that he is addressing the pressing global issue of missing children, sharing that it is a significant concern for Melania as well. He stressed the importance of resolving this issue and reuniting children with their families.
