Zelensky Meets with UK Prime Minister Ahead of US-Russia Summit
On Thursday, British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to London, just one day before a significant US-Russia summit in Alaska.
Zelensky’s visit came right after a virtual meeting with President Donald Trump from Berlin, where he and several European leaders received assurances that Trump would prioritize efforts for a ceasefire in Ukraine during his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for Friday.
Leaders like Zelensky and those from Europe are anxiously concerned that the summit might overlook their interests and potentially favor Moscow, which raises worries about the ongoing security situation in Ukraine as Russia continues its full-scale invasion.
Despite these concerns, figures such as German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron described Wednesday’s video meeting with Trump as constructive. Trump indicated to reporters that there would be “very serious consequences” for Russia if Putin does not agree to halt hostilities after their meeting.
Emphasis on Territorial Integrity
The Alaska Summit was deemed “very important” with the potential to serve as a “workable” avenue for a ceasefire. However, there were also hints of apprehensions that Trump might propose terms that could require Ukraine to relinquish territory to Russia. European leaders were advised to prepare for increased pressure if necessary.
During a call among leaders from the “coalition of will”—those ready to oversee future peace dealings between Moscow and Kyiv—it was stressed that any agreement must safeguard Ukraine’s “territorial integrity.”
“Borders cannot and must not change,” a leader stated emphatically.
Trump Open to Offering Security Guarantees
Kiev has consistently argued that Western countries need to provide assurances against future Russian aggressions to ensure long-term resilience in Ukraine. Yet, many Western nations remain hesitant to engage their military forces directly.
Countries like France and the UK have been working diligently to secure American support as necessary. Following the virtual gathering, Macron commented that NATO should not be part of any future security guarantees—rather, Trump should take a more personal role in these discussions.
“What we received is a very important explanation,” he observed.
Additionally, Council of Europe President Antonio Costa welcomed US commitments to collaborate with Europe in enhancing security conditions as Ukraine seeks stability.
Mixed Feelings Among Ukrainians
In light of ongoing high-level meetings regarding the future of Ukraine, some citizens expressed doubt about the likelihood of significant progress emerging from the upcoming US-Russia summit. Oleksandra Kozlova, head of Kyiv’s digital agency, noted that many Ukrainians feel disillusioned.
“I don’t think this round is decisive,” she remarked. “There have already been enough meetings and negotiations that promised resolution, yet we’re still at this point, and nothing has changed.”
Meanwhile, Kyiv auto salesman Anton Vyshniak emphasized the importance of preserving the lives of military personnel, even if it means making territorial sacrifices.
“Right now, the priority is keeping our servicemen and women safe. We’re running low on human resources,” he stated. “Borders can be redefined, but human life is what truly matters.”
Ongoing Attacks Between Russia and Ukraine
On Wednesday, officials in Ukraine reported that a Russian strike in the Smie region injured a seven-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man, with the girl currently hospitalized in stable condition.
In the southern Herson area, Russian artillery targeted the village of Molodizhne, injuring a 16-year-old boy, according to Governor Oleksandr Plokdin. He reported that the teen faced serious injuries to his arms and legs and was hospitalized in moderate condition.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone attack resulted in a fire at oil refineries in Russia’s Volgograd region overnight, as reported by local officials. The independent news outlet Meduza noted that these refineries have been frequent targets for drone strikes.
Overall, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the destruction of 44 Ukrainian drones aimed at the annexed regions of Russia and Crimea overnight.
