Zelensky: Losing to Putin is ‘the same’ as death

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Sunday that losing a war with Russia would be as tragic as death as the country marks the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

In an interview with CNN’s Caitlan Collins, Zelenskiy was asked about his earlier comments that losing was worse than death.

“Do you still feel that way today?” Collins asked.

“It’s the same,” Zelenskiy said. “Today is the same.”

“Because the only goal he wants is to kill you, your people,” Zelenskiy continued. “To lose him means to be killed.”

Zelenskiy’s interview comes as U.S. lawmakers struggle to find the political will to pass President Biden’s request for more foreign aid, including billions of dollars for Ukraine. The Senate passed a $60 billion national security package for Ukraine, but House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has refused to take it up.

While members of Congress are trying to find an alternative legislative deal that includes funding for Ukraine, many international security experts say the aid provision, which many international security experts see as a strategic investment to prevent a large-scale war, will go even further. It warns of the risk of being late.

President Zelenskiy said in an interview that U.S. aid will play a key role in determining the future trajectory of the war. He said Sunday that there would be no new military advances this year unless the country gets the aid it desperately needs.
