Zelensky observes the anniversary of the war, pledging to continue the fight, stating that Putin has not met his objectives.

On Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices made during four years of conflict, stating that the nation would not compromise its integrity for peace with Russia. His remarks came amid visible divisions among key allies as they marked the anniversary of the civil war’s onset.

Many European nations aimed to finalize a new set of sanctions against Russia along with a significant loan of 90 billion euros for Ukraine. However, Hungary, which maintains strong relations with Russia, continued to obstruct these plans on Monday.

Hungary and Slovakia have accused Ukraine of purposely halting Russian oil deliveries via the Druzhva pipeline. In contrast, Ukraine asserts it is undertaking essential repairs to the pipeline following a Russian strike last month.

Leaders are unlikely to attend the ceremony in Kiev.

President Zelenskiy had planned to greet high-ranking Western officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during the ceremony commemorating the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. However, unlike previous years, major Western leaders are not expected to be present.

“President Putin has not attained his objectives. He has not wiped out the Ukrainian people. He has not triumphed in this war,” Zelenskiy remarked in a morning address, extending an invitation to US President Donald Trump to visit Kyiv.

“Only by experiencing Ukraine firsthand—the daily struggles—can one truly grasp the nature of this war,” he added.

Countless soldiers from both sides have perished or sustained injuries in what has become Europe’s deadliest war since World War II. Additionally, Russian military actions have claimed tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilian lives and devastated cities through missile and drone strikes over the years.

A candlelight vigil took place in Irpin to honor the victims of Russia’s aggression as part of the anniversary observances.

Negotiations for peace, mediated by the United States, seem to have reached a standstill, primarily over territorial discussions.

Moscow insists that Ukraine must surrender the remaining 20% of its eastern Donetsk region, but Ukraine remains steadfast, insisting it will not give up land for which so many lives have been lost.

“We desire a strong, dignified, and lasting peace,” Zelenskiy stated to peace negotiators. “We cannot disregard the struggles, courage, and dignity that Ukraine has exhibited. It’s crucial that we do not let this go, forget it, or betray it.”

French President Emmanuel Macron remarked on a recent show that Russia has paid a steep price for minimal territorial gains. He stated, “One day, the Russians will realize the gravity of the crimes executed in their name.”

Polish President Karol Nawrocki echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine presents a significant threat to European security, while honoring those who bravely defend freedom daily.
