Conversation between Zelensky and Modi on Russian Oil Purchases
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, reinforcing calls for India to reconsider its purchases of Russian oil. It’s a notable shift, as India has increasingly relied on Russian oil, especially after Europe imposed sanctions.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to Modi for his supportive words towards Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict that escalated significantly in 2022. He underscored the importance of limiting Russian energy exports, particularly oil, in light of India’s involvement in the matter.
This dialogue comes against the backdrop of U.S. President Trump’s announcement of tariffs on Indian goods, partly aimed at curtailing Russian oil trade. The U.S. and India are currently negotiating their economic ties, especially after a significant review of trade partnerships initiated by Trump earlier this year. Despite buying Russian oil, India has implemented protective measures in agriculture, which might complicate the trade discussions.
Throughout their conversation, Zelensky noted it was productive, highlighting their stable relationship despite previous diplomatic inconsistencies. He pointed out that Ukrainian involvement is crucial in any discussions related to their future.
Interestingly, there’s news that India may sway Trump to consider inviting Zelensky for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, although no official announcement has been made yet.
In an extensive part of his statement, Zelensky reiterated the necessity of limiting Russian oil exports to diminish their war efforts. He stressed that leaders with influence over Russia must send clear messages regarding this issue, mentioning upcoming discussions at the UN General Assembly in September.
Modi’s response was succinct yet confirmed their dialogue regarding Russian oil and possible future meetings. He reiterated India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine.
Following a recent conversation with Putin, Modi is actively balancing relations, considering both Russia’s longstanding ties with India and the contemporary geopolitical landscape. It seems India is trying to navigate maintaining its relationship with Russia while addressing the increasing pressures from the U.S.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided a more detailed account of Modi’s call with Putin, confirming discussions about upcoming visits and updates regarding Ukraine.
Despite ongoing tensions, India has not wavered in its support for Russia, reflecting its historical alliances even amid rising talk of U.S. tariffs. Modi has recently sent an envoy to discuss these matters further with Russian officials, reinforcing India’s strategic partnership while facing external economic pressures.
Amidst this backdrop, it appears India is gradually reducing its Russian oil imports and increasing its share of U.S. imports. Reports indicate that Indian refineries are starting to scale back their purchases of Russian crude and are looking more towards the UAE for oil supplies.
