China’s Stance on Peace Talks
China has expressed support for “direct dialogue” between Russia and Ukraine following a conversation between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, wherein Trump indicated a desire to initiate peace negotiations promptly.
A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “China supports all efforts aimed at achieving peace,” advocating for continued dialogue to arrive at a lasting and fair resolution acceptable to all parties involved.
Current Status of the Conflict
Good morning. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to unfold, particularly in light of yesterday’s call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Trump described their conversation as “excellent.” However, the Kremlin has declined to agree to a ceasefire, despite increasing pressure from Washington and European allies.
After a two-hour discussion, Putin labeled the call “very meaningful” and expressed a willingness to collaborate with Ukraine on drafting a memorandum for future peace talks. Yet, he upheld that Russia’s fundamental goals in the war remain unchanged.
Trump also mentioned that he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders following his call with Putin. In a statement late Monday, Zelensky noted that Ukraine remains ready for a comprehensive ceasefire and direct negotiations. However, he emphasized that if Russia is unwilling to halt hostilities, stronger sanctions are necessary.
