Peace Talks in Rome
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Rome as discussions about peace continue amidst the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
During their talks, they reviewed previous negotiations held in Istanbul, where, notably, Russia had sent a lower-ranking delegation that lacked influence. Vance emphasized that Ukraine is open to genuine diplomatic engagement and stressed the urgent need for a complete and unconditional ceasefire.
Topics of their conversation included Russia, defense cooperation, bilateral trade, and the situation on the battlefield. There was also an emphasis on sanctions related to future prisoner exchanges. Vance remarked that pressure on Russia is necessary until they feel an urgent need to halt hostilities. They also discussed collaborative steps needed to achieve a just and lasting peace.
This gathering took place just after an unusual agreement for a large prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, although a ceasefire was still out of reach.
This weekend, world leaders convened in Rome for Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural Mass at the Vatican, which President Zelensky also attended.
A few hours post-meeting, a Russian drone strike targeted a passenger bus in northeastern Ukraine, highlighting the war’s volatility. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, on a tour in the Middle East, stated he would discuss the conflict with President Vladimir Putin soon; he mentioned the intention to schedule a call aimed at addressing the violence and the heavy toll it has taken on soldiers from both sides.
Trump noted that he planned to call Putin on Monday and expressed hope for a resolution to the ongoing crisis, which has resulted in significant casualties—reportedly averaging over 5,000 soldiers monthly. He added that the day should be productive and that a ceasefire would be desirable, calling the ongoing conflict tragic and unnecessary.
