Zelensky Calls for Legal Changes to Enable Elections Amid Pressure
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is urging parliament to create a “legal framework” for conducting the nation’s first elections since 2019. This comes as he faces mounting pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump and a growing corruption scandal within his administration.
Zelensky stated that elections could potentially occur “within the next 60 to 90 days” if the United States continues its support in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. His aides, involved in various corruption issues, pose a significant threat to the stability of his administration. Concurrently, U.S. pressure is increasing for Ukraine to accept Trump’s proposed peace agreement.
“This is a critical time to hold an election,” Trump commented in a recent interview. “They’re using war to avoid elections… It’s reached a point where it no longer feels like a democracy.”
Notably, President Zelensky has maintained that holding elections is impossible under the current martial law that was instituted at the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022. To facilitate elections, he emphasized the need for lawmakers to amend existing laws related to elections during martial law.
On the legislative front, Congress is planning to bolster Ukraine’s defenses with a new allocation of $400 million included in the latest version of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. Additionally, this bill designates $200 million for U.S. European Command, with a substantial $175 million set aside for security initiatives in the Baltic states bordering Russia.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Zelensky’s approval ratings have remained relatively stable, with a recent Gallup poll indicating that 67% of Ukrainians still support him.
As of now, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not responded to inquiries regarding these developments.
