Zelensky Open to Concessions for Peace with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently indicated that, while he has previously dismissed certain proposals, he is now considering specific concessions to facilitate peace with Russia.

In a conversation with a journalist from Brussels over the weekend, Zelensky commented after President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin held a notable summit in Alaska. During that meeting, Putin suggested that Ukraine relinquish control of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as a prerequisite for peace. Zelensky acknowledged this request, expressing that he is weighing potential arrangements.

He noted, “Putin couldn’t take it for 12 years,” emphasizing Ukraine’s resilience in the face of prolonged conflict.

Ahead of his scheduled meeting with Trump on Monday, Zelensky shared that Ukrainian officials are open to a potential “land swap” to secure a peace agreement, albeit firmly rejecting any notion of surrendering Donetsk.

A recent map illustrates the current battle lines, revealing that Luhansk is entirely surrounded by Russian forces, whereas approximately one-third of Donetsk remains under Ukrainian control. According to Zelensky, discussions should begin with the current frontlines in mind.

He expressed to the New York Post that “real negotiations are needed,” asserting that these contact lines serve as the best basis for dialogue.

Zelensky took pride in Ukraine’s strong defense of Donetsk, remarking, “Putin could not take it for 12 years, making it impossible for the Ukrainian constitution to concede territory and trading sites.”

Looking back, in April 2022, he had previously stated that Ukraine would not cede any land in exchange for peace. In a July 2022 interview, he again rejected the idea of giving up territory, referring to such considerations as “unconventional” by December 2023.

Zelensky remarked that discussions about territorial issues should exclusively involve Ukraine and a unified Russia.

After the recent US-Russia meeting, Trump commented that Ukraine’s “security measures” had been largely agreed upon between him and Putin, implying that Ukraine would receive certain guarantees without NATO’s involvement. Trump noted that the responsibility for finalizing this peace deal now rests with President Zelensky.

In response, Zelensky said he is eager to understand the specifics of these “security guarantees.”
