Zelenskyy shares news of upcoming talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia in Abu Dhabi

Ukrainian President Initiates Peace Talks Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced over the weekend that discussions involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are set for this week, aimed at making headway toward concluding the war, especially as Russia intensifies its offensive across Ukraine.

In a post on X, Zelensky mentioned that the negotiations will take place in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Ukraine is ready for meaningful dialogue and is committed to outcomes that lead us nearer to a genuine and dignified resolution of the war,” Zelensky stated.

This announcement comes as Russia escalates its strikes on Ukraine’s energy and logistics infrastructure, complicating the situation for civilians as winter descends.

U.S. Concerns About Russian Actions

Ukrainian officials have observed that Moscow has frequently targeted critical infrastructures like power grids and water supply systems throughout the nearly four-year-long conflict, labeling such strategies as an attempt to wield winter conditions as a weapon against civilians.

With forecasters predicting some of the lowest temperatures of the season—around -22 degrees Fahrenheit in certain regions—conditions are becoming increasingly challenging for the population, as noted by Ukraine’s State Emergency Services Agency.

Last week, former President Donald Trump mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin had tentatively agreed to pause assaults on Kiev and other cities during this severe cold snap.

Trump stated, “I personally asked President Putin not to strike Kiev and its surrounding areas for a week during this period of exceptionally frigid weather,” adding that Putin “consented to this request.”

However, the White House did not provide specific details about the suspension, and Ukrainian officials have shown skepticism regarding Russia’s sincerity.

President Zelensky acknowledged on Thursday that significant hurdles to a peace agreement persist, particularly concerning the future of occupied Ukrainian territories and Russia’s claims on non-occupied lands.

He highlighted that although Russian forces have attacked energy facilities in various Ukrainian regions recently, such strikes have been a consistent issue, not merely confined to a specific event or timeframe. Attacks using drones and missiles on residential areas persist.

While Trump viewed Putin’s acceptance of a ceasefire as a sign of concession, Zelensky expressed doubts about Russia’s genuine interest in peace, especially as the war marks its fourth anniversary on February 24.

“I doubt Russia’s desire to end the war. There’s substantial evidence indicating otherwise,” President Zelensky remarked.
