ABC's late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was widely expected to field softball questions to Tim Walz during a highly publicized appearance on Monday's show. But the conversation with Kamala Harris' running mate ended up being even lighter than that. It was Wiffle's ballgame with little substance and a lot of meek praise from Kimmel.
“You're a real person. It felt like our fantasies conjured you up. We felt like we needed someone really kind to help us,” Kimmel exclaimed. .
No matter how you look at it, Jimmy Kimmel has erased recent memories of Tim Walz's ineffectual performance in the vice presidential debate and restored his folksy grandpa image to resonate with Democratic voters. It fulfilled its obvious mission.
As a result, much of the conversation focused unusually on Walz's time as a high school teacher, which included stints as a cafeteria monitor and prom chaperone. Kimmel declined to ask about Walz's decision to put tampons in the men's room. And the policy issues that voters care about most, such as record consumer prices and unprecedented levels of illegal immigration, received zero airtime.
Kimmel even helped Walz do his dirty work by gently nudging candidates to talk about Jan. 6 and school shootings, topics meant to demonize political opponents.
Walz ended the interview with yet another gaffe.
“I'm going to wake up with the first lady on Nov. 6,” he said.
Kimmel responded:
“The problem is that I can't be specific about everything,” Walz answered.
