Williams Recovering After Fall Against Nets

Ziare Williams experienced a tough fall during the game on Sunday against the Nets in San Antonio, resulting in some bruises along with what he described as a “small, very minor” fracture in his back. Although he mentioned a quick recovery, he acknowledged that some soreness might linger as he returns to the court.

Taking it day by day, Williams expressed hope to be back in action when the Nets face off against the 76ers on Sunday.

During a Raising Cane event in Times Square on Thursday, he talked about his condition while promoting an impressive 2,741-pound pumpkin carving. He noted, “…But this doesn’t get worse. So it’s really just about managing pain. Once that eases up, I mean, it won’t be perfect, but at least it’ll be manageable for now.”

Williams added, “If I can handle the pain, and if my sliding defense is up to par, then I’m ready to play.” He’s in his second year with the Nets after being a first-round pick, looking to revitalize his career. In two games this season, he averaged 18.3 minutes with just six points, but he broke out with 25 points against the Cavaliers last week, helping Brooklyn remain competitive in the Eastern Conference. His role, however, could feel somewhat uncertain on a team that recently brought in five rookie first-round picks, even though he showcased his potential last year with 45 starts and 63 appearances.

Known for his defensive skills, Williams took responsibility for the team’s struggles in their opening three games, during which they allowed an average of 128.3 points. On Wednesday, he observed the game from the sidelines as the head coach spoke about improving defensive efforts, saying they aimed to limit opponents’ scoring and build stronger defensive plays over entire games.

“Control the bleeding for 48 minutes,” Williams remarked, reflecting on the team’s challenges when they fell behind by 15 or 20 points. They are currently reviewing film to understand how to halt opponents’ scoring runs. He feels that when they exert pressure, they perform well, forcing turnovers and challenging shots.

Williams concluded, “We need to figure out how to start strong.”

Meanwhile, Michael Porter Jr. has been impressive this season, already matching his two 30-point games from last year with the Nuggets. However, head coach Fernandez noted his frustration over some ball-handling issues, especially after the Nets scored just 16 points against the Hawks in a recent loss.

Fernandez pointed out that the team allowed 27 points from 16 turnovers in that game, emphasizing, “We’ll accept 14 turnovers, but beyond that, it’s critical. If those turnovers lead to easy baskets, it really compounds the problem. You’ve got to be able to recover and stop them.”
