The new mayor is aiming for some noteworthy changes.
Mayor Zoran Mamdani and his partner, Rama Dhwaj, officially settled into Gracie Mansion on Monday, which has sparked some ideas regarding updates for the bathrooms in this historic residence.
“One of the first things we want to do is install bidets in Gracie Mansion,” Mamdani mentioned outside the famous location on the Upper East Side.
“That’s definitely a big hope. We’ll see if we can actually pull it off,” he added.
Other than addressing plumbing issues, Mamdani, known for his progressive stance, is committed to not allowing his new luxurious surroundings alter his approach.
He stated that he plans to continue commuting from Carl Schulz Park at East End Avenue and 88th Street in Yorkville, using the subway, buses, and his Citi Bike to get to work.
“Even though the deposit won’t be taken out today, Rama and I will work every day to respect this beautiful home, recognizing that we’re just temporary residents,” he noted.
“It’s not just about a fresh coat of paint. It’s about being deliberate in how this historical building reflects our city’s civic life, managing the space thoughtfully and allowing more New Yorkers to experience it,” he continued.
Mamdani had remained quiet about moving into the mayor’s mansion until after the November election, leaving behind his $2,300 per month apartment in Astoria, Queens.
A recent article suggested that Dwaj seemed less than thrilled when asked about their shift to the Upper East Side.
Nevertheless, the couple decided to relocate to Gracie Mansion largely for safety concerns.
Mamdani seemed upbeat during their move, making light of former Mayor Eric Adams’ claim that Gracie Mansion is haunted.
“I’ve yet to meet a ghost or hear from one,” he joked.
He also teased the idea of welcoming a cat into their home soon.
“I’m currently getting allergy shots to manage my cat allergy,” he shared. “So, there’s that hope.”
