Zoran Mamdani, running as the Democratic candidate for mayor, has criticized ABC’s choice to cancel a town hall event and to temporarily suspend Jimmy Kimmel from his late-night show.
In a press conference held on Monday, he remarked, “It’s not just about local affiliates or the diligent journalists. It reflects on the leadership of a company that avoids its responsibilities and undermines press freedom.”
The cancellation of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” follows Kimmel’s controversial remarks relating to the murder of political commentator Charlie Kirk, where he suggested that some groups are attempting to misrepresent the killers.
Mamdani’s comments arise as he emerges as a frontrunner in the race for mayor, facing criticism for his reluctance to engage in public debates. Some perceive City Hall discussions as a more convenient setting for him compared to traditional debates.
He is expected to participate in official general election forums with WNBC and NY1 in October, though he seems hesitant about engaging with independent candidate Andrew Cuomo across five wards.
Mamdani announced plans to shift the town hall to another station, labeling ABC’s decision as a “political statement.”
Interestingly, despite calling for the cancellation of Kirk’s speaking events in New York City, some have labeled Mamdani a “far-right” extremist.
The latest on Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension after Charlie Kirk’s comments
Mamdani criticized the practice of giving platforms to controversial figures like Kirk and Candice Owens, saying it contradicts the values of diversity and inclusion that New Yorkers uphold.
Cuomo’s spokesperson expressed that halting Kimmel’s show may have been ill-advised, while claiming that Mamdani is avoiding interactions with the public.
Since the primary election, Mamdani has not been forthcoming with reporters, dodging questions about his previous promises regarding prostitution decriminalization and retracting statements about addressing racism within the NYPD.
In the upcoming election on November 4th, he will face Republican Curtis Sliwa and current mayor Eric Adams.
Mamdani previously secured the June Rank Selection Primary against a range of candidates, including Cuomo.
