Controversy Surrounds NYC Candidate Zohran Mamdani’s Remarks on Israel
Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has recently garnered attention—again—over his comments regarding Israel. In a resurfaced clip, he stated, “Israel is not a place; it’s not a country.” This remark has faced scrutiny, especially given the city’s significant Jewish population.
Mamdani, who is increasingly prominent in the discussions around Palestinian solidarity, was criticized for his reluctance to condemn the phrase “globalization of intifadas.” During a panel discussion in January 2024, he raised eyebrows by suggesting that many American politicians’ support for Israel seemed disconnected from current public sentiment.
He labeled the pro-Israel movement in the U.S. as “a political device that is still well-funded and very strong,” yet noted its growing separation from what people actually think. He further commented on the U.S. backing of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, saying, “It shows that for many, Israel exists more as an idea than a physical place.”
Mamdani also pushed back against the feasibility of a two-state solution, suggesting that the current political reality makes it nearly impossible. He remarked, “American politicians cling to the notion of a second state for Palestinians, even when the actual land is unviable for such a solution.” It seems there’s a real disconnect, he noted.
He expressed concern about what he perceives as rising fear among politicians questioning the status quo of U.S.-Israel relations. In his college days, Mamdani was an advocate for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, a stance he reaffirmed in a 2021 video.
Mamdani emphasized that no act is too trivial when it comes to protesting what he calls apartheid atrocities. “Whether it’s a shipping container or an event featuring an Israeli ambassador, we need to demonstrate solidarity,” he insisted.
Attempts to reach Mamdani’s campaign for further comment went unanswered. Despite his controversial views, the progressive candidate continues to provoke discussion on significant issues ranging from policing to foreign policy in America.
